Friday Afternoon Legal Services
IBEW Local 48 offers a legal services program to members. The legal services program consists of a half hour consultation with Local 48's attorney, Norman Malbin.
Obviously, what Norman is good at is labor law and employment law. However, after more than twenty years of practice Norman has enough experience in other areas of law that he can usually help you figure out how to begin dealing with a legal problem.
Norman will not help you with three things:
Disputes with signatory contractors. If you have a dispute with a signatory contractor you should see a business representative first. If Norman becomes involved in resolving the problem, it will be on behalf of Local 48. (Note: This does not apply to Workers’ Comp or unemployment issues.)
Disputes with IBEW related organizations (i.e., pension or health or credit union). Norman may be able to help get you pointed in the right direction on how to deal with a problem but he will not get involved in a dispute with A & I, Edison or District Nine.
Disputes with another member of the IBEW.
The service is available to members, their immediate family (i.e., parents or spouse or children) and retirees. The cost is free and totally confidential. Appointments are on Friday afternoon at IBEW Local 48 and last for one half hour.
The most common issues members see Norman for are divorce, Workers’ Comp, criminal arrests and personal injury. Frequently the best service he provides is a referral to an attorney who is competent in the area where you need help.
To make an appointment call Norman at 503/889-3669 or Kristi at 503/889-3660.
