All Classical Portland Takes Aim at New Audiences and Representation

Portland's All Classical Radio has new initiatives to bring more diverse music to more diverse audiences

The IBEW local 48 business representative for All Classical Public Media, Inc., Donna Hammond, brings us this refreshing and inspirational story of inclusivity.

All Classical Portland, the city’s 24-hour classical music radio station, is blowing up the stereotype of contemporary cultural irrelevance. Last month marked the second anniversary of ICAN (International Children’s Arts Network), the station’s newer, separate radio station aimed at the very youngest listeners: kids and teens.

The images above were shared by Suzanne Nance, CEO at All Classical. They show the recording session at the Bodecker Foundation from their first Recording Inclusivity Initiative (RII) work by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. This work has never been recorded before, and KGW showed up to capture the very first notes for tonight’s TV newscast, performed by Adam Eccleston and Monica Ohuchi.

Nance wrote to the team, "It is thrilling! This morning we were also greeted by a comprehensive Oregon Artswatch article about All Classical Portland’s important initiatives including RII, ICAN, and the JOY program; and All Classical’s demonstrated leadership in the industry. https://www.orartswatch.org/radio-rejuvenation/

The IBEW Local 48 salutes the leadership shown, and the working relationship at All Classical.
