Darvin "Don" Halverson
September 18, 1917 - August 31, 2013
Darvin Halver Halverson was born in Bowbells, North Dakota on September 17, 1917, to parents Gilbert and Cora (Thompson) Halverson. His brothers and sisters have all passed on.
He worked on his family farm where they raised cattle and grew wheat. In 1937 he left North Dakota. He and a friend snuck onto a train car and came to the Northwest. He went to work on a dairy farm. The farmer gave Darvin the nickname "Don" and it stuck from then on. Don worked in a sawmill and later fought in WWII in the US Air Force.
Upon his return home, he became an Electrician's Welder - an occupation he kept for the rest of his days. He was a proud member of Local 48 for many many years.
In the mid 1950's he married Harriet Allen and they had two daughters. Sue was born in 1958 and Diane was born in 1962.
Don's favorite hobby was following the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association. He would travel to listen to the music and visit with others who followed the music. For approximately 25 years, he used his motorhome to travel to "Jams" in Idaho, Washington, and California. He immensely enjoyed the freedom of traveling to these competitions.
He is survived by his daughters Sue Halverson and Diane Erickson; grandsons, Curtis Erickson (21 years of age, in the US Navy, and stationed in Washington State); and Benjamin Erickson (age 18); and great-grandson, Leif Erickson.
A memorial gathering will take place in Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, September 6th, 2013, at 2pm.
He will be privately laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens in the garden of Everlasting Life.
