Archie ‘Dean’ Smith Jr.

Archie Dean Smith Jr., 88, of Kelso passed away Aug. 17, 2014, at the Hospice Care Center.

He was born March 11, 1926, in Sheridan, Ore., to Archie Dean and Elsie Smith. He graduated from R.A. Long High School.

He married Donna Rae Smith in Longview in 1948. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Dean served four years in the Navy and was a 60-year member of Local 970 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 48. He was a lifetime member of the Masons and Scottish Rite. Dean enjoyed building furniture and coaching Little League. He was a grand human being with a caring and giving nature.

In addition to Donna, Dean was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Dean Smith; and a grandson, David Earl Doane.

He is survived by his friend and caretaker, Kathryn Kuk of Kelso; three children and their spouses, Ernie and Robin Smith of Issaquah, Wash., Diana and Mike Messinger of Castle Rock, and Robb and Sue Smith of Silver Lake; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith of Longview; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Sandy Smith of Longview; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and potluck are planned for 1 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Castle Rock Eagles.
